HELP!!! 200 pontiac Sunfire warning lights????

My friend Mary has a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire. Unlike most this one has been trouble free - until yesterday. (we car pool) yesterday and today some warning lights started to come on in the dash

First it was the seat belts light (we were both securely belted in), then the Air bags light, followed by the traction control light.

Now today, add on to the above list, the parking brake light, and the brakes light, as well as the anti-theft system light (the car does not have an anti-theft system) accompanied by a rapid fluctuation in the temp gauge and the tach needle bouncing up to 6,000 plus and back to reading properly

A couple of weeks ago I had replaced the battery and the positive cable for her but other than that, nothing had gone wrong in the 6 months we have been car pooling together.

HELP!!!!!

Possible loose battery cable. Try that first, could be the SDM (module for the air bag.) this could also turn on seatbelt light. Not sure if the brake and other lights could be effected by SDM. Hope this helps.

Follow up

Battery cables are both tight & clean. The OBD II scanner shows no codes whatever (reads "no dtc codes")

Sorry, you responded as I was editing my post. You could try a used SDM from a wrecking yard.

HELP!!! 200 pontiac Sunfire warning lights????

sounds like ground issue , in dash circuit ?
like when your tail lights lose ground and your blinker is on with the parking lights on .
you did battery , does it have the coating still on them side post hook ups ?
corrosion gets in there and makes bad connection , even though they are tight .

2000 Sunfire electrical

Looks like it was a badly deteriorated body ground cable (where it goes back to the neg batt post)

It had gotten "metal fatigued" to where most of the strands were outright broken and the few remaining ones were cracked.

So - chopped a couple of inches off the end, crimped on a new ring terminal (and put that under the head of the terminal bolt) and it seems OK now. We'll see how it works out over time. Its a "McGyver" solution and temporary at best, but it was essentially zero cost as $$$$ are an issue for her right now (long story that I will not get into)

Long term (like a couple of weeks from now)- I'll get a new cable for it and do it right, sometime when her back is turned so she need not ever know I spent ten bucks on it for her (she has a LOT of pride and will not accept charity)
