Most Chevy's like 38 degrees total MECHANICAL advance. Don't worry about the vacuum total. That only comes in at cruise/ no load driving for better gas mileage.

If your plugs are still set at .35, you can open them up a little to take advantage of the hotter HEI.

Just my 2 cents.

Glad to hear you got it figured out.

I had some Edelbrock carbs in the past and the main problems that I had was sticky throttle activation due the terrible accelerator pump design and vapor locking in the summer due to the wrong carb material.

Yes, don't worry so much about the total timing from the vacuum advance. The vacuum advance should shut down when the vacuum drops at WOT at higher rpms. As long as it doesn't detonate while the vacuum advance is on in the mid range rpms then use it for better mpg and throttle response.
