Help 454 gen 5

Hi ive just pulled the cam from my gen 5 454 engine to change it for something better. surprised to find no cam thrust plate! however sprocket alignment looks ok and cam gear hasnt been touching the front cover .my book only mentions the gen 6 engine, with roller cam, which does have a thrust plate. My question. Am i missing a thrust plate or does the gen 5 with flat tappet cam not have one? PS ive never had this engine running ,im building it to replace my current engine !

Flat tappets don't need one. They are self centering.

A flat tappet cam is ground so the lobe taper causes cam to not go forwards.

Roller cams are ground with no taper thats why they need a thrust plate.
