Sounds like you have the GM 9.3 "C" rearend. Looks like the ford nine inch but bigger. It should have a 13 spline pinion gear. Mark Williams is the best place to get parts for that particular unit.

You have a Hotchkiss style axle in that car, it looks similar to a Ford 9 inch which is the most popular Hotchkiss style axle.

The type of axle you are "thinking" should be in there is called a Salisbury axle, with the non removeable gearset and sheetmetal cover.

Here is a link to some brief info and a pic.

This link is backed out one step from the above link, with a similar description to mine.

rear end

M-M , I'll have to disagree with you on the non removable gear. I used these rears in my early oval track cars. They were very tough and if you could find a standered shift Pontiack they were 4.30 gears on the old ones and 4.11 later. I think they would interchange from at least as far back as 38 to 54. As best i can remember the bolt patern was round where the Ford is oval. KEITH

Only passing information I found on the internet.

If you have anything more to share, by all means we welcome you to do so.

I still have to agree that by his description he has a hotchkiss style axle.
