I have heard of some aftermarket attempts at air bag retrofit kits, I think it is ludicrous.
I work on late model collisions these days. I have an ICAR certificate in advanced systems such as air bag (SRS) and anti lock brakes. The whole car is designed around the air bag. It is an extremly complex systems of sensors, and computers. It isn't just a "switch" on the bumper that blows an air bag. There are sensors that take into account vehicle speed, vehicle braking, rate of slowing, what air bag sensors are tripped, etc.
Not only that, but the entire passenger compartment is designed around the air bag. You have under dash shields that guide your legs as to not (hopefully) break them. The seat belts also have similar "charges" in them as the air bag that take up slack in the belt in a fraction of a second.
There is much much more to it than just the air bag in the steering wheel.
Listen, you are playing with odds, plain and simple. The odds that any one of use reading this will need air bags one day is slim. I mean REALLY need them. Air bags blow all the time, I repair cars ALL THE TIME with air bags that blew in some super minor accedent. Regular old seat belts would have left the driver with little to no injury. Yet the bags blew and quite possibly caused more injury than if they hadn't blown!
Just drive your Camaro and enjoy it. We all drove zillions of miles before there were air bags and 99.999999% survived.
