Help!!!

I'm thinking about getting a 77-79 Ford F-150 4wd with a 400 or 460. If i get one then i'd like to lift it and get bigger tires (maybe 38's or so). So I need to know what i would have to change the gears to. I'v been told that a lot of them had 203 transfer cases (or something like that) and I would rather have a 205. So i need to know what to do. I found an ok 77 4wd in the town I live in that I might be able to get pretty cheap. And I really need to get something going on what to do before I buy.

First off you'll have to find out what it's got.

I don't remember the year they started using the radius arm/coil spring front suspension, but has it's drawbacks as far as lifting to accomodate a set of 38 inch tires is concerned.

You would be much better off all the way around starting out with a -ton truck with leaf spring front suspension, and manual transmission, along with the NP-205 transfer case, as they are all pretty much standard issue on that era truck and better components from the start.
