Hiya, I just registered on here and I'm hoping someone can help me, I have a 72 chevelle, I have built a 383 stroker long block, 10.1-1 keith black forged pistons, 5.7 rods with chevy #492 double hump, 2.02 1.60's, that have been fully ported and polished, I still need to purchase the top end, and want some advice, It will not be an every day driver mainly weekends and the occasional trip to the strip, any info on cam, intake and carb selection to maximize this combination will really help, I have the money now but don't want to buy the wrong set up, oh I'm also using a 400 turbo

I'd go with an air gap type intake and a carb between 600 and 750 cfm

sniper there is no wrong setup. you must be very honest with yourself when building your engine/car. a street car is not a drag car. I am building a 64 chevelle, 383,flat top pistons, 6"rods, catcrank, roller cam/lifters, roller rockers, duel carb highrise 600 edelbrock carbs, headers, 3500 stall, turbo 400 trans, ford 9", 33x18x15 drag tires, and a set of slicks. I plan to drag and hopefully not drain my pocket.

I'd go with a CompCams 280H cam, It has the lift for the heads ,(Roller cam if you can afford it)You want a cam that comes on 300 rpm before the converter does.
Scorpian roller rockers,Holly 300-36 hi-rise intake, Holly 4150 650CFM mechanical secondarys with a Mallory ignition with Bosch Plus 4 plugs.

I'm building a 383 that sounds to be close to yours. I've chosen to go with a Crane roller cam #HR-284-25-121G. This cam has 222 deg. duration on the intake and 230 deg. exhuast, 112 deg. separation and 509 lift on intake/ 528 exhaust at .050.
I've been told this will be a streetable cam with respectable performance. Coupled with a good intake and carb combination, I favor the air gap with a 750 demon, you can expect 450+ HP and 490 tq.
I would suggest you get on the web and look some of the "crate" 383 offered out there and this should give you an idea of what different cam profiles will give you. The roller dose cost more but it gives you so much more in "streetable" performance.
Actually for street use an Edelbrock performer rpm and 750 will work just fine.

Sounds like a sweet setup..... But I think you need to ask yourself questions, The perfect combination for you can oly be answered by you.

What rpm range can my engine run for a long time or short time with high RPM's depending what you are asking for.

What is the purpose for the engine long life short life tellin your buddy to snatch the twenty off the dash when you hammer down and then a few G's take over, real fun.

I sugest tlaking to the experts in the feild or looking at the cam catalogs and get a idea of what you want and need then search out the intake manifold and then find the carb to feed the beast tthe best.

I have built seveal engines and have never had one return, keep it simple and you will reap the rewards for a long time.
