Honestly? If you can't afford a flight to go see it and make the deal, you can't afford the deal anyway.

There are also "for hire" services available to do on-site inspections for you. Some are call appraisers and some are called inspectors. There is a fee involved, usually dependent on how for the appraiser has to travel to see the car. Last I checked it was around $200-$300.

Obviously, as noted above, seeing the car yourself is the best alternative. Appraisers can only go so far in translating the true condition of a car and assessing such things as ride quality - which can be a matter of personal taste.

Responses are focusing on inspection and such which I would recommend BUT you say you "feel good about the potential deal, but not sure how to do this safely". I take it you just want to know how to ensure you will get the car w/legal title when you ship your bike. I have never traded but I would think some type of escrow company would be able to advise you. I would research escrow companies (google). How about your insurance agent. He/she may have some advice on this.

Good Luck

I have been in thiese types of sales/purchases over the years and the best way I know of making a secure transfer of merchandise is to locate a hauler that is bonded and pay them the extra money to inspect the paperwork against the vin tag before they load it for transport. As far as any leins etc. you can do that yourself by acquiring the vin # from the owner of the vehicle and contacting the local DMV of the State and County it is in. If that clears and your hired shipper ok's the paperwork, I would say to go for it. A bonded shipper will transfer paperwork along with car. I have never had a problem with this method.
