Help - engine cutting out

Was out at the track the other night and after a few runs with no hint of a problem my motor cut out just before the 1/8 mile mark. changed a suspect piece of fuel line and the filter and tried again. Car was great for about 3 or 4 runs then did it again. It didn't kill the engine completely and as it cut off I backed off the gas and it went to an idle, when I gave it some peddle it ran fine at part throttle. and was fine until I tried it again, then same thing at the same point in the track. If I parked it for awhile it was fine again for a couple runs then did it again.

Could it be:

vapour lock- my fuel line runs up the front of the engine and the motor was running on the hot side of 200

not enough fuel/weak pump- original fuel pump with return line

to lean- plugs looked ok, but with the converter it spends more time at high rpm - might be reaching a bit with this one

This was the first time out with a 2800 stall as opposed to the stock converter. Engine is a 454 with edelbrock, xe268, headers.

your thoughts would be appreciated.

my guess is fuel issue, sounds like fuel pump might be heatin up and not pushing right i've had a few fuel pumps actually do this exact thing, once allowed to cool and set they work for a time and cut back out again.

An insulator under the carb can help if the fuel is percolating. Check the fuel pressure AND volume. You want about 5 psi and for a 400 HP engine the pump should be capable of flowing 40 gallons/hour.

If you are using a Q-jet carb, they have a small fuel bowl capacity that makes them more susceptible to run low during a run- if the pump's not up to the task.
