Sounds like its just thinner.
I had the opposite problem with the damper I bought. I had to shim out all my accessories 1/2". I used 3/8" ID aluminum and steel tubing and washers where applicable. I recently switched to square tubing for more support.

I would wait for some other idea's from the more senior members that would have some more experience. I just wanted to tell you what I did. I don't know how well crank pulley shimming would work and how safe it would be for the long term.

Dampner alignment

Are you using the original pulleys? If they are new, are they a set, i.e., did you buy them from the same manufacturer?
If you use a short water pump, you need short pulleys, you can not interchange them.
Also, the cheap, Taiwan-type made pulleys do not always line up.
If you have a speed shop nearby, a good parts guys can get you the correct pulleys, pump, dampner to match.
Dampners typically are consistently the same depth, but some time you have to try a number of combinations to get everything to lineup, however, you should NOT have to use shims behind a pulley, and frankly, I wouldn't recommend it.
Hey, if hot roddin was easy, the big three would be building them!

As said, the set has to match, if you have the damper you removed measure it`s distance compared to the one you have now, that`ll tell you if it`s the damper or if the pulley`s don`t match.
