help identify truck

hi. i have lately been craving a truck. i know that i really like the 49 chevy truck. love the body style.. especially the 5 window. i have a few options and im not sure what it is i want to do i need help to identify the differences. theres a local builder who has a 49 3 window, but it is all in parts cab on ground fenders here and there.. and a bed and hood. a long frame that he said he could Z and shorten. and then it would basically be a rolling car no motor or tranny. and also someone tried to install their own sun roof.. not great but can be removed and patched. 500$(not much rust)
another is a 53. engine not in it but would be put back in it. i havent seen it, but there may be some rust(which could mean anything) ill be checking it out. wants 1000$ for it. and last a 54 that has a 78' straight 250, rusted back corners, and some dings and other surface rust. runs but brakes are shot. its a five window. and the wood part of the bed is completely missing. side rails are all there and tailgate. wants 1400. prolly wouldtake less. anyway. so im interested. one of my main problems is not knowing what the difference is between all these years of trucks. everywhere on the internet i see that it always says 49-58 or something like that.. so are all the bodies the same? can anyone point out the differences between the years of 49 through 58 or maybe. however it works. and also, do i go fro the cheapest vehicle and build cheap? i dont want a perfect truck.. i just want a good running good looking primered truck or cheap paint job. of course customed to my preference. the guy who wants to hook me up with the 49 3 window is a great guy and he would let me help him do everything and teach me stuff so thats worth alot to me. but do i want a more complete truck that i dont have to look for parts. just make them nice again? so anyhelp on identifying these years or being able to tell the difference, or let me knwo what year is best...would be great.. also any advice on the choosing of my project ...

Try this

try as those guys seem to have the skinny on those trucks..

If you can get some pictures to post then maybe someone can recognize just which year they are as there are some small differences in grill details and such..

The more complete you are the better off you are to begin with...Myself if I found a complete cab and fenders that is what I would be looking for, hopefully one that is solid..just basically surface rust..that would be the start of a great hot rod truck..

What ever you do do a good job of it and you will have a great project and one that will be in your garage for along time..

Just my thoughts..

I have tried most all of it and now do what is known to work..

The AD (Advanced Design) series of Chevy and GMC trucks ran from 47 through the first half of 55 with few changes. The 47-50 had no vent windows in the doors and rotating door handles. The 51 and up all had vent windows in the doors with push button handles. The 54 and 55 had a different grill which dictated small changes in the front fenders. There is also a difference in the hoods and front fenders between the GMC and Chevy units. Overall the entire series had very few changes throughout its entire run.

When evaluating the cab common places for rust are the cab corners and lower "A" pillars. Repair panels are available for pretty much anything that might need to be replaced. When it comes to these trucks there are several regulars here on that are building them so there's no need to go anywhere else unless of course, you want more opinions. The guys on chevytalk tend to be more oriented towards "restoration" than anything else but they do have in depth knowledge of these trucks.

If it were me, I would choose the truck that needs the least amount of metal replaced and one where the frame wouldn't need to be "modified".

Good luck whichever you choose.
