Help IDing an L31 Vortec Motor

The first thing I've found out is that the Mortech site is down or gone. I have what appears to be a crate L31 motor. Heads are #12558062 and block is #10243880 w/ GM 5.71 also on block. Appears to have never been run. My only question left is that on the right side of the block is a metal tab about 2" x 3" with Part# 57101 & Ser# 201677 stamped into it. Does anybody have information as to what this is? It has the look of a factory tab but I'm unable to find any real information on it.

I'm also going to be looking to find out how hard or easy it is to make this a carb. motor, but I assume that I will have to post that in another forum.

Thanks for your help.

Metal tag is probably from a Reman. Co.

That was my first reaction but after really looking hard at this motor it has all the ear marks of a GM Crate. All the little green, white, etc. paint inspector marks here and there along with the GM new oil pan with tag on it and the block appears to be 1998 or 1999 vintage and this was part of a "project" car that set around for several years until it was bought by a friend 2 years ago and he decided to go with a new Hemi instead. It doesn't make a lot of sense that the motor would have the block casting date and then end up in a rebuilders shop and back out in time to set for several years until now. I'm trying now to find out how long it set around before my friend bought it.

I agree, sounds like a reman. New GM crate engines do not have a metal tag like that.

Suffix code will narrow it down more, if it hasn't been removed>> http://www.chevymania.com/chevymania...fm?block=Small
