The reason that you are having trouble identifying it is because it is not a hood ornament. What you have there is a high tech competition grade horse shoe. Not the kind that a horse wears but the kind that you throw in the game of horse shoes. Better balanced due in part to the added length and definitely more aerodynamic, this style of horse shoe was only used for a couple of years before the the American Horse Shoe Throwing Association banded them from all forms of competition. If you had a full set and the stakes to go along with them, you could just about name your price.

Still skeptical about the horseshoe thing. Looks like there might be some mounting legs under it. Also the finish looks like pitted pot metal. How about a picture of the underside?

J. C. Whitney used to have a page of hood ornaments. Lighted, gaudy, hokey, and just plain weird.

I was disappointed to see that they now show only 3 or 4 hood ornaments.

Point is, it's AFTERMARKET.

You could check with THIS GUY. He has an email addy there.

hi all, ok this thread got the better of me, I wrote to the horseshoe association to see if that could actually be true. this is the letter they sent back:

To: <info@horseshoepitching.com>Sent: Tuesday, March 24, 2009 12:15 PMSubject: website message

NO it is not a Horseshoe it appears to be a hood ornament from an early 50s desoto or perhaps a plymouth,

cheers

I bet one of those in forged steel would make a darn good competition horseshoe. Anyone know who made the tortoise hood ornament? It has the rabbit"kills" like on the old aircraft on his shell , also had the pilots helmet, scarf and goggles, and smoking a cigar.

Check this site. It will take a while to go through. Click on the US flag, then the manufacturer, then the ornament. There are probably a few hundred, but this site is probably the most compiled findings. http://www.mascot-mania.co.uk/ BTW......There are NO "competition horseshoes" on the site

Mystery hood emblem

Thanks crownver, Chris Kemp, dinger, heyjude076, cobalt327, powerrodsmike, AngieM, Chevrolet4X4s and Kevin45 .. I'll check out your suggestions.
I'm pretty sure it's not a horseshoe
May very well be after-market
You've got me thinking though, maybe the car companies should bring back hood ornaments... could help sales in this rough economy
Here are some more pics as requested... keep the ideas coming.
I'll let you know when I figure it out.

Maybe a longshot, but I wonder if it could be off of an old boat? Some of them back in the 60's had chrome on the bow.
