I've got an '86 chevy c10 w/ a 305 and i dont have enough torque to make me happy, any suggestions on how to add torque without spending too much cash?

Sell the 305 and the money you got, get a 350, then you can upgrade the 350. You got 45cid to start with. Even better yet get a 400sbc. Then you are talking torque. Well over 400ft pound of pulling power. Because a 305 will not produce to torque you are looking.

The 305 is already pretty maxed out in the torque area. You're limited by size. Doing a search on the internet usually turns up a few free 350s, some that run. At worst, spend $400 on a good running one that you can test and drop it in.

$400 and a weekend engine swap and you've just added 100 lb-ft

c'mon guys, he wants to be happy. Why not a big block 454 out of a late model truck.

The reason is, If try to install a big block you have too modified the exhaust system, a bigger radiator, different motor mounts. A 350 or 400 sbc will bolt right on same place a 305 was in. Save a lot of $$$$

FIRST = Bet your cam is running 4* retarded due to timing chain wear. Install a 3 keyway timing chain, and time the cam 4* advanced. That will give you 8* more cam advance. $ 50

Second = 4 tube headers, 1 1/2 inch diameter.
Collector extensions to a total length of 24 inches,
8" long cone reducers to 2 1/4" true dual exhaust,
H pipe,
Magnaflow mufflers,
at least 15" turndowns, or tailpipes.
$ 500

Third = Distributor ignition advance recurving, using full manifold vacuum to the vacuum advance can. $ 50
You could do this second, but it probably needs to be redone after the exhaust.

Fourth = more rear end gear $ 300 or if you can find a good junkyard rear
OR slight stall converter. $ 600 or luck into a used one at a swap meet.

Fifth = mess with the engine, etc. $$$$$$$$$$
