help me understand ring gap

there are certain things i dont understand, like why is running too tight of a ring gap bad, why do nitrous motors require a wider gap. etc...any info to help me understand this will be cool

Just like anything else in an engine, rings expand when they get hotter. You have to set a gap when its cold so that they don't butt together when hot. If they do, they'll wedge in the bore and scratch, or they'll gar the piston... or both.

Nitrous engines see much higher peak temperatures in the chamber, which means you need to run a little more gap since the rings might see higher temps.
