i have a 71 nova and im in the midst of putting a gt45 on it... it is a single tubro passenger side top mount...the turbo is above the valve covers one issue is the where the pipe is for the wastegate is hitting the frame a little( im sure if i break the grinder out i can fix it) the other issue is the steering box just like in every other car lol... i think that lifting th motor up in the engine bay would be the best way to solve both problems at the same time...my question is if any of you guys have done that or any ideas on what to do... my worst case scenario is putting a whole bunch of washers in between the motor mount and the block just wanna get some ideas first thanks in advance

I would get a couple of blocks of aluminum the right thickness for spacers.

yeah thats a better idea than stacking washers but do they sell something like that...i have to fab nearly everything on this build i would like to shorten the list a little if i can

You can pick up small pieces of any steel at Metal Supermarket or a similar metal center.
You could also use 3 pcs of a solid round bar with a hole drilled thru the middle. Anything would be better than stacked washers.

If you are fabricating all this to begin with, why don't you just move things around to make them work with the car as-is :confused: I own a 70 Nova and I understand the steering box problem. It just seems to me that if you raise the mounts, you will also throw off the trans mount(will also have to be raised) then the drive shaft angles, then the pinion angles. See where I'm going with this?

yeah i see what u mean... the only thing is that im using a set of prebuilt turbo manifolds the driverside is almost like a regular header and it crosses under the pan to the other side and goes thru the passenger side manifold and out of the turbo... since the headers are the way they are i have to make everything fit around them ...what else can i do any ideas...on the driver side its hitting the box...and on the passenger side the tube for th wastegate is hitting the frame just a tiny bit and also the lower part of the pass side is like a millimeter away from the starter i think a mini starter will solve that problem though... the box is the big issue

Have you tried lifting the engine yet to the hgt you think would help?
If so, does the tranny hit the tunnel?
Might be good to pull the mount bolts and give her a lift to see what issues may arise.

Why not get different headers/manifolds. They dont work with the the car. Dont change the car to fit the manifolds. You're also raising center of gravity. Not a good thing if you want it to handle well in turns and such.

Unlike naturally-aspirated headers, turbo headers don't have to be tuned, so you can cut 'em up and/or modify 'em until you get 'em to work. From a performance standpoint, you could probably make the same power with cast iron log manifolds as you could with a set of fabricated headers, it's just that the headers would have more eyeball.
Be careful raising the motor/trans. Some of the heat of operation finds its way out of the car between the bellhousing and the transmission tunnel. You're gonna make more heat with a turbo and you don't want to be cutting off some of the escape route of the hot air from the radiator.

its just that thats one thing i dont have the expertise to start modifying so im trying to work with them... i had twin turbos on the car but decided to go with a single turbo and the header that i got for single turbo are the ones im having trouble with ... if i felt comfortable cutting them up and making the work i would but i have never done that before so im trying to look for alternatives... i think im ok in the heat dissappation area because i removed the inner fenderwells and only one turbo now

Use one of the headers from the twin turbo motor and one regular header. Or have someone modify the ones you have. Its not that hard if you have the right tools. I would not raise the engine.

yeah i was thinking to maybe use one block hugger header i have an extra on it sucks though cuz the manifolds i have are real nice not just that they are shiny stainless but also i liked the idea how the connect together it was a good design in theory i guess
