Help with my cam selection....please
Here is my combination:

BBC 454 .040 over (462)
10.2:1 Hypereutectic .250 popup pistons
Stock 781 oval port heads with 1.7 roller rockers
Weiand 8005 Large oval port intake
750 CFM 3310 Series Holley Carb
HEI ignition

This is all to push around a 72 Chevelle with a 4 speed and 3.42 gears.

I had a Comp Cams xe268h and was somewhat satisfied with the performance, but the infamous Comp Cams Xtreme energy sewing machine noise really bothered me. I had a lifter go south on me so I'm changing the cam a lifters at this time. I'm thinking about these cams, and would appreciate any input.

Lunati 60203 - 268/276 Dur - .542/.554 lift

Lunati 302A7 - 280/288 Dur - .525/.550 lift

Comp Cams 280H - 280/280 Dur - .520/.520 lift

Which do you think would work best with my combination?

What are the duration at .050 numbers? I saw that you didnt like the extreem energy cams, but I think the XE274H would really wake your motor up.

Extreme Energy sewing machine noise? whats that all about? Id like one of these cams, but sounds are important to me? Can somone explain?

I had an XE268H in a small block, and may have heard a little noise, but nothing radical.

Why dont you type "free download of dynomax 2000" into your internet search and it will guide you to where you can download the computer software to try out cams in your engine using computer simulation, that will take all the guess work out of it.

Thanks for the reply's guys. Firestone/RFC - I thought about the 274, but when I plug the values into my Desktop Dyno 2000 it doesn't give me as good a numbers as the Lunati cams and the CC 280 Magnum. I figured since I am going to change the cam anyhow, I might as well get rid of the sound that I don't like from the Comp Cams xtreme energy profiles. Warrent - The Comp Cams Xtreme energy cam profiles are very aggressive. Because of the fast ramp close angles they make a sound kind of like a sewing machine that I don't like. Mark - I have desktop dyno 2000 and I plugged the cam specs into it. These cams come up very similar horsepower and torque numbers. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with these cams in a combo similar to mine.

I am very interested in this thread, as I am building a 454 myself. Would you please expand on your the pistons selection. I plan on using a Lunati 292. ( ) w/ a 3000 stall. Same set up with your heads. Except a 3 angle job. Are you sure that the noise is not the hyper's and not the cam? Does your 750 perform good on the 454?

Hi Nolowrider, I went with the .230 dome Federal Mogul Hypereutectic pistons because I'm not using nitrous, and I needed better then straight cast aluminum. The tolerances on the hypers is tight enough to not make the noise that forged do on cold mornings, yet still can handle up to 6k without me getting to concerned. The 750 is ideal for my combo because as I said I'm not revving any higher then 6k. Small enough to give me good throttle response, yet big enough to feed the 454 on the top end. As I mentioned, I liked the 268h xtreme energy cam for power, but I just don't like the noise it makes. I spoke with Comp about the cam and they said several people complain about the xtreme energy line of cams, especially in the big blocks. I was looking at the Bracket master II cams too, but I was told the Vodoo line gives better bottom end torque and still performs as good up top. Hopefully we'll find someone that has used them both and can tell us which performed best.

cam options
I have not used any of thosse cam in a big block before but I have used the 268xe and the 280h in a small block. I built it with the 268 then he decided he wanted something bigger and i had a 280h laying around. the differeence was night and day. Now he cant even hook up in second gear if he floored it. and this is in a 4door chevelle w/275 tires.
