Help spraying metallic

Hey guys,
my dad is painting my car tomorrow, Primed and sanded today. My dad has only painted a few cars this being his first with metallic in it. FYI It's single stage plum crazy purple, My question is if God forbid we have any problems, runs, dust, etc is it tricky to wet sand out? I read online that wet sanding metallic can ruin/change the way the metallic looks even after buffing. Also any tips or advice for spraying paint with metallic?
Thanks,
~Nick

Hope all goes well tomorrow.
Alot depends on the type of paint you are going spray.A single stage paint Enamel for example relies on the way it is laid down.It is what it is when you paint it. Plum crazy metalic is not one of the easiest to do that way.
A base clear would likey be easier a lot more room for fixing mistakes. Your base color can be put down and repaired be for you apply the shine (clear) and if you run the clear it can be buffed wet sanded with no effect on the metalics.
Good luck
Conroy
I may help to use a wide fan/spray setting on your gun when spraying the color and also stay back a little from the car to let the paint fan out more than normal. this may help reduce tiger stipes from happening. Fog in and cross hatch spraying will also help.

Thanks, I don't remember the type of paint. We got it at NAPA they told us it was the most forgiving paint. The only thing about BC/CC was my dad wasn't sure because he'd never done it before...

He will need to alternate his pattern he sprays the car at 45 degrees from one coat to the next. He'll also need to overlap each pass by 1/2 of the previous pass.

You can always clear coat it just like basecoat,
I do that, it sure makes buffing safer and gives a little
more UV protection.

You'll cut the edges of the metallic particles and it might affect their reflectivity. I've cut single stage metallic before and polished it and it looked kinda blah and uneven.

good light needed

I used to hold a trouble light in one hand so I could see how the paint was laying down. a spark- arc can be dangerous. It would be best if you could rent space in a regular booth with good ventilation and lighting.

Thanks guys,
Now if things don't go our way and it looks like shrt. Is clear coating something I can do anytime? Or do I have a window? Of course it would suck to retape the car, our problem is we are borrowing a neighbors garage which we transformed into a nice paint booth, but he's leaving for Iraq and we won't be able to use it.
