Help with trunk hinge

OK, I'm going with a fiberglass trunk lid for my 31'. I'll be using an external hinge for looks and ease of use. Bolting the hinge to the body will be no problem as it is metal. My concern is that bolting the hinge through the fiberglass trunk may cause the inner & outter panels of lid to collapse. I'm thinking some kind of spacer is necessary to avoid this. I'm sure I'll think of something eventually but has anyone delt with this and have any ideas for me? Thanks.

If you don't have any way to get a spacer in between them. Why not drill a large enough hole to get the flat washer, lock washer and nut through the inner panel. That way there will be no tendency to distort either one.

Then if I use a larger washer or fab a plate to the curvature of the trunk lid it should provide plenty of support. Thanks Long John, thats a good idea.

Is there anyway you can use a stock "hinge"? There is nothing more simple, all it used was a bolt/pin that went straight into the corner of the lid in the and it pivoted on it!

I think I know what your describing. It probably would be easier but not the bling factor I am hoping to achieve with gate type hinges. Havent found the right hinge yet but I can picture it perfectly in my head.
