help with weird oil leak

ive been toying around with motors for several years with the help of my father (a long time gear head) well hes gotten to the point where it got a few misses up stairs if you know what i mean. any way to the point

I have a sbc in my malibu right now matted to a muncie 4speed with 2.73 rear gears.
when really get in the throttle it sprays oil all over my passenger sid of the car covers my brakes and entire right side of the block... i have oil spray in the locations i marked with a red arrow in the picture.

i changed the oil pan gasket and pan. new fuel pump/gaskets new timing set and cover/gaskets (it a billet aluminum one now) valve cover gaskets pcv system

i dont blow my dipstick out when under load. but i blow oil everywhere the motor has about 30k on it after it was rebuilt. i changed to a breather instead of a plug... im lost and about to toss this motor..

First thing I'd check is for a missing (or loose) bolt that is used as a plug for the threaded hole that runs at 90 degrees to the fuel pump push rod passage. The threaded hole is there for a bolt to be temporarily inserted to retain the fuel pump push rod when the pump is R&R'ed. If the short bolt that functions as a plug to this passage is missing oil that dribbles along this shaft will be blown out of the lower front of the block on the passenger side, most of it will be there and in the wheel well, but some will be picked up by the fan and underhood air currents and spread around in other places.

that hold is plugged with a bolt and sealant

from the location of the arrows they indicate that the oil is being slung out by rotating pulleys and belts. what color is the oil?

oldskool66 02-14-2013 02:05 PM

i thought that too so i bought a new harmonic ballancer the oil is a a clear brown like new motor oil should be.

I've slept since I last built a small block, so I've forgotten a lot. However I'd look at the front lip on the pan at the timing chain cover--that used to be a good source for leaks. how is your oil level, is it low--how is your power steering level--how is your coolant level? Lay a piece of paper in the oil to see what the color is--red idpower steering, perhaps a line is leaking--green or orange, depending on your coolant type, could be a waterpump or hose. If it is motor oil look for the source, not where the oil has been slung.

Where is your oil pressure sender?
Sounds like it might be building up pressure in the crank case. You don't have a pcv? You probably need one.

oldskool66 02-14-2013 03:00 PM

i have a pcv system i replace the valve and the breather on the other side. my oil sender is in the back of the motor my the dizzy. i know fore sure its motor oil all my levers are at there proper levels.

the balancer won't fix an oil leak. If that is where it's leaking, the crank seal in the timing cover should be replaced.

gearheadslife 02-14-2013 03:14 PM

there is two type pan gaskets, one short front seal and one big.. you got the correct one for the pan/timing cover used right??
it as you stop come out, and get on balancer that would sling it at your pass side wheel

bob wilcox 02-14-2013 03:33 PM

there is supposed to be a conical shaped washer, an oil slinger, on the crank. the flared side of it goes toward the crank, the rear. If it is not in there or is in there backward you will have an oil leak. From what you said, the only other things I can think of that after market timing cover might have a defect causing it--check the end play in your crank--too much and it will eat the seal--a little more and it will wipe your main webs in the block. I don't know what else to tell you, good luck!

help with weird oil leak

I am just taking guesses so here it goes. The fuel pump mounting plate, http://www.asaperformance.net/servle...me-fuel/Detail the breather in the valve cover, timing cover seal, corners of the right valve cover. As much oil that is all over the front of the car you should be able to see it leaking while it is running. Have someone rev the engine while you take a bright light and look for leaks. Oh yeah, the front intake manifold seal. BTW how much oil pressure do you have at idle?

macrobert68 02-14-2013 04:02 PM

Just a thought ,if u have a oil cooler look for leaks comming thru the radiator .does the inside of the radiator have oil on it?

64nailhead 02-14-2013 04:10 PM

Buy some leak detection dye and grab a black light. It should do te trick.

X2 on it coming from or getting into the front of engine accessories by the way it is all over.

My last resort would be to remove the hood and have someone else run the heck out of it while you're watching. That should at leeast give you an area to look closer.

The black light and dye system works great. You can grab the dye from Napa or most any truck dealership.

Good luck - nice looking motor.

it only leaks oil when there is load on the motor i can run it at 6k all day no leaks get on it on the free way and it blows oil at 2500... i replaced every gasket and seal including intake manifold timing cover valve cover gasket.
