If the car runs fine at idle, stumbles when you accelerate, then runs fine again after you reach speed, most likely the accelerator pump in the carb is not pumping raw gas into the carb properly. Shine a flashlight into the carb while you activate the throttle, with the engine cut off. You should see two strong streams of gas going into the throat.

Most likely your secondary spring is to light and opens the secondaries to soon, get a spring kit and experiment. Gas leaking is a bad gasket or o-ring on the transfer tube, buy a pit kit and go over the carb.

i think ive got the same carb on my car and i have the same problem, it idles fine and if i accelerate slow its ok all the way up to 65 or 70mph if i stand on it doing 30 or more the secondaries kick in but if i stand on it from a dead stop it just stalls. i always have to go easy from a stop. the carbs been rebuilt once a while back and ive checked the gas level in the bowl i dont see anything that looks bad but im stumped myself i also dont consider myself a pro at carbs either. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I have had more that a few people come to me with this problem. Their first instinct is to dive into the carb. If there are no vaccuum leaks and the accelerator pump is working correctly then check your distributor. I am willing to bet that the mechanical advance is frozen. In time, these mechanisms gum up with crap and don't move. You should be able to grab the distributor rotor and turn it about 10 or 15 degrees. It should move freely and then spring back quickly. Also check your vaccuum advance. Check to see if it holds vaccuum and then check to see if it moves the rotor when you draw a vaccuum on it. You will need a vaccuum pump for this- can be picked up at sears or auto parts store for about $30. Let me know what happens.

I had the exact same problem with my 950 cfm 3bbl Holley on my 354 Hemi. Lived with it for a long time 'cause I thought it was just a problem with the carb being too big for the engine. Then I got tired of the problem and studied it closer. I too thought my accelerator pump was throwing out a great stream of gas. At closer inspection though, I discovered that since I had adjusted the AP cam for max stroke, it didn't engage the pump lever for a couple of degrees of trottle stroke. This was my problem; the accelarator pump wasn't stroking at the critical first crack of the throttle. I adjusted the cam so it already stroked the pump arm a few 1000ths at rest and that solved my problem! Now ANY movement of the trottle squirts some gas in the AP circuit.

sounds like a CLASSIC example of what happens when you need to INCREASE the size of your accelerator pump.

It could be the seal around the throttle shaft causing a vaccume leak. That is a common problem for lean spots. As for the acc.pump Loosen up the adjustment bolt for the accelerator pump (tighting the bolt&nut) and then adjust it to where it just touch's the pump lever(adding length to the bolt), open up the carb so the pump is in its full position and check the lever for approx,.015 looseness before bottoming out, adjust the lever to add more squrt,if you have a larger gap, never bottom out the lever , you can rip the rubber diafram.Holly carb has a free manual to download for this type of info plus more on all of their carbs.LOL
