Question Hey Chuck!!

WEll,.......... now Chuck , you got me all excited about your Mitchells software. Getting ready to dig into a buddy`s 2.3 liter 4 valve engine in his 89 Grand Am. He`s short on money (three kids!!!) and hasnt gotten a manual yet. Sounds like we have a problem with a valve, haven`t really done any diagnostics on it yet, just listened. Gonna hook up the ole vacuum guage, and see what happens, any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

72 is that the quad four in your buddies grand am, if it is good lawd will you have fun. I chainged a fuel pump for a bro of mine in his '89 and it was $300+ plus a pain to replace. The heads on the quad fours are 3 peice heads and just a whole lotta stuff crammed into one car. I despise that engine, but only because I had to work on one

have fun man, hehe

72 Chevy, your e-mail is required to send the views requested. The one listed in your profile comes back as unknown user. Click my e-mail address cjridley@shaw.ca and I will reply with the info. Exploded engine and head views are forthcoming.

A member of my car club built a early model Dodge Omni ice racer with a 180 HP version of the Quad 4 to compete with the Hondas, we called it Quadzilla because it was overpowered and crazy to drive. The car was easily the quickest car on ice and was equal to the Hondas in every way. Why put the engine in an Omni? Try and find a car that is lighter when stripped. I believe the car was under 2000 pds dry. Great engines with lots of potential. Not the smoothest out there mind you-WHO CARES!

WOWWWWWWWWWW!!!! What a mess!!!! Great pics, Chuck!! Where can we get that Mitchell`s stuff?? Oh yeah, What`s the vacuum signal going to be like for a bad valve with this engine, pretty close to Tech-4???

Typically a bad valve manifests itself as a wandering vacuum signal but constantly low values (13-16 in/Hg) might herald more than one valve involved. Do you suspect a bad valve? A leak test is a better indicator.

As for where to get the Mitchell manuals on CD you can go here and pay the $400 US down payment and $258 US per month for 12 months or you can be real nice to the Chuckmeister and he will provide all. What you have seen is only the tip of the iceberg, there are even original EPA fuel mileages listed on the CD's. This package is of course intended for large garages and I have the domestic and import version with the transmission cd's just for good measure. I can also hook up a scanner to my computer and graph out the results right from the computer and compare to factory specs. Pretty cool, it's the next best thing to having access to the factory database. All of them.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a working password to this site?. The one I had no longer works, some very good info there. Helps to be employed by GM.
