Hi and a few questions
I am really enjoying the forum. Here is my story. I have been interested in cars all my life. My dads been a mechanic until he retired 3 years ago. Mostly just fixing old junkers from the neighborhood. Most of which should have went to the junk yard many years earlier. At this stage cars really didnt interest me until I bought my first mustang in 1988. Make a long story short this was my first "hot rod". I washed it and waxed it a couple times a week and love it.... Until I went to the supermarket one night came out a buggy was resting against the drivers door. Well from that point on all I could see is that scratch. I save the entire summer and got the entire car painted a new electric blue. The guy that painted it talked to me and shared some of his experience everyday till it was repainted. Well since then I thought all this was magical and only a skilled few was capable of painting. In some degree I think that still true.
Flash forward to 2 weeks ago. I was waxing my Honda Si and I noticed rock chips all over the front end. I wonder can I paint this myself... naaaa. I started reading here and autobody 101. Got brave and decided to paint it myself. Went out and bought Diamont base and Spi products and few other paint supplys ... Love that SPi stuff BarryK ![]() Here is a pic of the puddy. I guess its too late to change my mind after this right ? Then I over thinned the base and got a big bug in the base. Went got some more base and re shot and cleared it... All happy now. Now on to my question... I want to repaint that old 88 Body is stright... been in the garage last few years. I was going to scuff fix small digs the same way and rebase and clear. For my hood it took about 1/2 pint of base. How much will I need for a mustang?

There are so many factors here, some paint brands cover way better
than others. Some colors take more to cover. What you're spraying over, like color of primer will make a difference. Bottom line, if I repaint a car I always buy a gallon. 3 quarts are usually needed but if you check the price it'll be about the same as buying a gallon anyway. And by buying a gallon you'll have a qt left over for future repairs. And if you have to redo anything you won't have to worry about running out of paint. |

I bought DIamont in the past...
Is that 1 gallon spray able or unthined as its mixed 1:1? I checked with the jobber this morning he suggested 1 qt and 1 pint. Anyway the base price alone is 374.00 for that quantity. I had no idea it would be that expensive for a solid color. |
