It sounds like your intake couldn't be sufficiently tightened and it was drawing oil from the valley.
Bolts and fittings are a real head ache any more with so much indo-asian junk out there. I ran into thread pitch problem a few weeks ago with carb studs from Holley, I don't know what they were made for but USS/SAE or any metric I know sure wasn't it.
