High oil consumption after intake and valve cover change

I put a very low mile 302 in my 65 custom 500 that did not use a drop of oil in between oil changes and after I changed the intake and valve covers it started drinking oil,I first suspected the valve covers and put the originals back on and it only slowed the oil loss slightly. I checked the intake bolts and most were loose even though I torqued them to edelbrocks specs, along with the intake I bought a installation kit that came with bolts and should of suspected inferior quality when one bolt broke so I removed all the suspect bolts and replaced them with the originals so I will see what happens now. DO NOT and I mean DO NOT use Mr gasket intake bolts as the quality is not good and I hope that was the problem as i dont want it to be a porus intake. Jeff

You valve covers are probably allowing your PCV to suck up oil. A lot of the cheap ones do not have baffles

It sounds like your intake couldn't be sufficiently tightened and it was drawing oil from the valley.

Bolts and fittings are a real head ache any more with so much indo-asian junk out there. I ran into thread pitch problem a few weeks ago with carb studs from Holley, I don't know what they were made for but USS/SAE or any metric I know sure wasn't it.

Now that I tightened the intake the motor starts better when cold,I am going to run it a bit tomorrow and see if it loses any oil. Jeff

I had the same problem with oil consumption after I changed intake manifolds. I didn't have a torque wrench, but I figured it would be ok if I just tightened it down real good. It wasn't, and I had oil all over the place. Finally took it to my dad's and used his torque wrench to tighten it down the rest of the way, and it hasn't used any oil since.
