high volume oil pump?

will a high volume oil pump drain out a street small block engine? in other words, will it starve the bottom end?

A high volume oil pump cannot suck the pan dry. That is another one of the wives tales out there.

A lot of builders recommend the high volume pumps over the high pressure pumps. They say that running tighter clearances can be better than a high pressure pump also.

I got a high volume and high pressure pump for my 400. 400s will sometimes have lower oil pressure. That is why I got the additional high pressure. Higher volume will also help the pressure.

there has been alot of talk in reasent yrs about pumps draining the pan.i've never had any first hand info on this myself.
melling performance makes asde from a regular hi volume pump
a pump with an increased 10% and apump with an increased 25%
through the yrs. though all the info published on sbc oil pumps says they have such a good design that all the different pumps they're making today is just more money for the pump industry.people use these pumps simply as an extra positive step in insuring that your motor doesn't go bang.if you have a race engine its another story.they have more to protect.i have a 406 with a high press. hi gh volume pump,but the only reason i got it was that i didn't have room in front of the radiator for my oil cooler cause my trane cooler was there.i had to run the oil cooler toward the rear of the vehicle and back to the oil pump location and thought i would need the extra umph to complete the circuit. instead i idle at 60lbs.of press.i tearing it down now and i will cut the spring a little to drain off some press.
ialso have a 7 quart pan and if i had it to do again i'd get the high volume pump and shim the spring a little.

Why don't you just run thinner oil?

what is the difference between a high pressure and high volume? which is better? my engine is a 350 "383" stroker. I just wanted the extra safety because i believe my engine had failed from low oil the first time. the psi at idle was around 18-20.
this is the pump that i am putting on now.

if that doesn't work, it is summit part number SES-3-60-08-037.

it is also for a stock depth oil pan.

this is what the little instructions say:

A NEW INTERMEDIATE SHAFT with a PINNED STEEL SLEEVE MUST be used with this oil Pump Application. Do NOT use a Substitute.

If the STEEL SLEEVE is not used the driveshaft of the oil pump can be damaged, resulting in failure of the pump.

The installed pink spring in the pressure regulating valve will allow the pump to bring the oiling system to equilibrium at approximately 70 psi.

That last paragraph sorta confuses me, does it mean it will max out at 70 psi when driving?

I'm running a high vol./high pres. pump in my 400..Oil pres. at idle is 60 and after crusing for a while , at a stop light, she is a a steady 20 psi.Goose it and its back up to 40-60 psi. Best of both worlds.....

Pinned steel driveshaft

The oil pump driveshaft will have a steel colar around were the shaft meets the oil pump shaft.A stock shaft just has a peace of plastic that goes over the joint.
I use High Volume oil pumps in stock oil panned motors,I've never had a problem.
I think unless your trying to spin 7000rpm with a stock pan and HV pump it should be fine.
