HOK Shimrin Metalic Bases

I am still trying to decide on paint. It seems like HOK Shimrin Metalic bases are no more expensive than Nason.

How bad of a idea is it for a first timer to try to shoot metalics? I presume the FBC woudl be a little easier than the BC?

How transparent are these? Can they be shot over gray primer and look OK, or do they need a white or some other color of sealer under them to look good?

Go with a GOOD base paint.
Especally being a nubie, I have some experience painting and a silver metallic is the HARDEST paint to shoot. I'd go with HOK over Nason ANYDAY.
See my earlier post on Silver Metalic Blotching a couple of pages back and get educated.

As for the primer,White would be my first choice but I shot over gray.
I don't know that it will make that much difference as long as you get good coverage.

yes, i agree. go with the hok. its really not a bad price at all. i pay somewhere around $25 - 30 a quart fo the bc or fbc. i usually use white under most hok stuff except the metallics. they come out less blotchy and cover quicker if put over a gray base, especially the silver. i usually use the bc over the fbc. the bc usually covers is 4 coats the fbc will probably be about the same or a little less.

Thanks guys. Being a newbie and having heard a number of times that metalflake is harder to shoot than a solid, I am a little nervous.

I would be getting the Nova Orange if I go for it.

I went in and talked to the guy at the local paint store today, and he told me I should use Omni, which is the same price I can order HOK for, and if I wanted to go up a step to use (I think it was DBC?) which is nearly twice as much. Makes it seem like it might be worth a attempt at spraying the HOK metallic base.

Listen to mrcleanr6...use HOK and don't look back or second guess what your doing. The main difference in BC vs FBC is the grade of poly (metallic content). BC=base coat, FBC= fine base coat. A finer ground metallic powder for a different "flip" or transition. Also, and this is a huge thing if you think about it, the HOK bases stay fluid for years. Their reducers are all blendable to all their products so compatability is a no brainer. Omni or DBC will harden and turn to junk in a few days or weeks depending on conditions. HOK handles very easy, dries fast, looks awsome, and is the choice of most every top builder and customizer the world over...for a reason. The fact that it's so wallet friendly makes me wonder why anyone would consider anything else for a custom job. Go for it. You'll be glad you did. Think of the look on the faces of those you tell that it's HOK on your project.

What a load of caca, can you offer some evidence for this absurd claim?
