They did bring the Monaro as the GTO
In 2004-2006, Pontiac built the GTO in Australia, based on the Monaro it features the LS1 engine in a sport coupe body. Unfortunately critics panned the GTO because it didn't have hood scoops, totally overlooking the performance which is comparable to the Corvette. In 05-06 they added scoops, but sales were sluggish, maybe in part due to the retro design Mustang.
I followed all of this closely, wanting badly to buy one, but the pricing was held above $30k by "market value" dealer markups. Two years ago today, I flew to Atlanta and purchased an 04 w/ 7000 miles on it for a very reasonable price.
IMHO, best car I've ever had, built well and performs much better than the 69 GTO I had in the late 70s. I've used the car as a dd, but still have just 25k on the clock.
