holley help pls

I'm guessing I want to plug these somehow correct? Someone drilled holes in my blades....sigh. and next question, what the hell is this plug at the bottom of the metering block? Normal? I have assembled a few of these now, and never had such a ***** of a time. Cannot for the life of me get the blocks off the body....I mean absolutely stuck....don't know how to get around that either.....dang it...

Take advantage of the opportunity , and upgrade the carb.

Soaking it should get it loose. The paper will soften.

When replacing the throttle plates , you can use some thread locker, and grind down the screws to not stick out so much.

The idle system is sensitive. You do not want holes in the throttle plates. Demon carbs had real nice thin throttle plates and short screws. I heard stories of people drilling those. Oops.

Yah, gonna soak overnight at the shop tommorow in varsol, then seperate and clean them up, as for the throttle plates will likely just jb weld the drilled holes closed with a very thin skim across them then smooth them off.

sounds like an old school carb from a big cam motor? use a nylon hammer (small one,big guy) and give the block a sharp rap.Use the neo gaskets when you put it back together.

what model carb? Im guessing 4781?

Nah, just a little 4779
But it is old and crusty, linkages all move nice, other then the stuck metering blocks it looks OK, I ordered a rebuild kit today, will bring to the shop tommorow and soak it till Friday, then rebuild it over the weekend. My rockers came in today, I finally got a tracking number for my heads so they may show up Fri or Mon, I still need intake gaskets, and exhaust gaskets, and once I get the heads on will measure for pushrods, if i get lucky and need +.100 like pro-filer tells me then i have a set here, and if not will have to order. Oh and head bolts, keep forgetting those and it irratates me spending 100$ bucks on them lol....ah well. I got lucky and picked up a brand new perf rpm still in the box for $100 bucks, so I can shelve the grungy used one i have. That's about it, I have the front suspension out now as I trimmed a quarter coil off the front on Sunday, then it got cold here again so i haven't put it back together yet. So should be a busy weekend if it warms up....yes, I know im rambling....haven't had much car talk lately and I'm getting excited to get it all together......

On a side note, I had sprayed the hell outa the base plate with a can of Carb cleaner, cause it was ick, and when I just went out now to set the secondary transfer slots, (they were closed) now the linkage has a slight hang up in it at would be just off idle? Would these just be a byproduct of me spraying half a can of cleaner and washing away any lubricant on the linkage?

I wouldnt plug those holes. Take advantage of them. Set your throttle blades both front and rear, (that is probably what is sticking in the bore) This way you can set your idle and the transfer slots wont be fully uncovered. You didnt say what carb this was or what it was going on. Those holes dont look big enough to affect idle quality adversely. If you do decide you dont like them, replace them, I woudlnt JB Weld there.

Are the throttle shafts gunked up or worse bent?

Look for where it is hanging up.

Actually it was just the linkage for the secondary being weird, all good now, plugged the holes with jb weld, lightly hit them with a wire wheel to clean off goo, they came out shiny and nice, plugged the holes, reinstalled and all moves freely and smooth. So the body is all cleaned up and ready to go, now letting the blocks and bowls soak over night, and will finish tommorow.

Heads showed up today, ordered gaskets, head bolts, brakets for TV/throttle cable. Should all be here Mon, will reassemble front suspension tommorow. Then hopefully next weekend get motor stuff done....!
