Home made Cal tracs
Has anyone made their own Cal Trac type traction bars? Where can I find plans?

Centerline, one of the moderators on this board has done it and has plans on his website.
http://hotrodsandhemis.com/ On the left side of the home page, click 53 Chevy pickup. Scroll down that page and click on Home Made Traction Bars. You can read the explanation of how they work and see some pretty good pictures here..... http://novaresource.org/caltracs.htm More explanations.... http://www.4secondsflat.com/CalTracs.html http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/catrbarsy1.html It looks like maybe Centerlines instuctions came from White's Performance.... http://whitesperformance.net/Cal%20Trac.htm I did notice that the bracket that hangs down at the spring mount where the bar with the heim attaches is shorter in the White's Performance version than it is in the original Caltrac version. This would alter leverage applied to the bellcrank. The Caltrac version looks to be just long enough to prevent going below the scrub line in the event of a flat tire. I think if I were going to cobble up some bars, I'd make several holes in the rear bracket and the front bracket so I could experiment with leverage. |
