Homemade Fan Shroud?

My 14 inch electric Zirgo puller fan on a 18Wx24H inch radiator isn't keeping the engine cool while idling (mild 350 Olds engine in street rod). Works fine on the road.

I only have 1 5/8 inch clearance between the original mechanical fan mount and the radiator. This fan mount is 15.5 inches below the top of the radiator.

I was thinking about trying to cut a shroud out of a large plastic dish pan or storage container lid that could slip down between the radiator and fan mount. I would then mount the electric fan to the improvised shroud so the fan would pull through a larger area of the radiator.

Anybody tried anything like this before?

John

I built one outta sheetmetal one time. It helped but still ran kinda hot.
Maybe try and match your radiator up with a car you can find in a salvage yard and use the shroud of it.
Only other thing is try a bigger fan or dual fans. HG

I built this one out of sheet metal. It happens to be for a mechanical fan but there's no reason you could'nt do the same thing for an electric.
