Hone-a-drive ???

Anybody here have any knowledge of or a contact link for an item called Hone-a-drive? It's a non planetary (counter shaft type) overdrive setup that was a dealer installed option on Baldwin Motion and Nickey GM muscle cars in the 70's and a bolt on for TH-400's both GM and BOP bellhousings. I've also been told that they made an overdrive unit that bolted to a Ford 9 inch, in place of the pinion retainer, that worked a lot like the Columbia 2 speed rear, (solinoid shifted) but much smaller and lighter. I've never seen either, but I want to... thanks,Paul

Hone-a-drive ???

This is the only pic I have seen that says it is a Hone-a-drive and it is not very crisp. Is this what you are looking for?

Yep, that's the beast.I've searched a lot and posted on several boards, but nobody has one in hand or any leads yet.
What prompted this quest may interest a few of you, I'm getting ready to do an engine swap on my 1984 GMC 1 ton dually tow rig. I'm droppin' in a 500 cuin Caddy in place of a very tired 350.(gee, imagine that!) this truck has the narrow rear end housing, the outside of the duals are flush with the body, (no blisters) I really like that feature. the drawback is the 4.10 gears, that big caddy stump puller would be much happier with 3.10's or 3.50's. just changing the gear set and retaining the posi in this housing is problematic and expensive, or so I've been told.
The Gear Venders route is around $2400.00 new and used units are bringing $14-1500.00 on E-bay, the V2OD is only $100.00 less, both out of my price range.
A planetary transmission is a fairly complex assembly, although they are more efficient and quieter than the counter shaft type, they cost more to manufacture, especially for higher torque loads.
I think for my needs, (high torque loads with weight , noise and "shift on the fly" not much of an issue) a non syncro 2 speed trans, coupled directly to the TH-400 is the right answer. Now all I have to do is find and source a gearbox that will work then fab up an adapter to couple it to the TH-400 and reinvent the wheel for cheap.
I know this has been done before so it ain't that tough and given the price of gas today, this could be a "po boy" alternative to the gear venders virtual lock on the after market over drive. Anybody want to help me "imagineer" this thing into my truck? I think if I build it ,they will come... RED

When I first read this post, I did a search because I had no idea what a "hone-a-drive" was.
I remember seeing somewhere that "someone" was pricing the units and that they were going for around $1,400.
Sounds to me like your best bet would be to change the gears...... but then again, they put 4.10s in at the factory to get that big beast moving.

What I would do is look for a OD trans out of a early 90s 2500 or 3500 to put in it.. One can probably be had for around $700 (guessing).

I pulled one of those off the scrap metal truck a few years ago! I put it on ebay and got about $300 as I remember, didn't even know if it worked!
