My Pontiac does that occasionally, if I don't close it hard enough......I imagine that the latch just needs adjusting.

Why in the world would you think you need hood pins to solve this riddle? There are exactly 856,568,458,153 cars in the world that drive an average 195,000 miles in their life with a stock hood latch and no pins, with 856,568,458,022 never having their hoods pop open. I think we need to look at simply adjusting and lubing the latch first.

As I remember a 66 Bird has a "dog pee pee" style "striker" (this is a family site) on the hood that goes into the latch and the latch grabs it with a metal "flap" looking piece that "entraps" the "Head" of the "striker".

First things first, lube the darn latch GOOD with a penetrating oil and latch it and open it over and over moving the parts. Then, put some white grease on the top of it where the "striker" goes in.

Get a ball off dumb dumb about the size of a dime and put it on the latch where the "striker" goes in. Bring the hood down until the striker hits this dumb dumb ball (you could use playdough or something similar if you don't have dumb dumb in the shop). After putting an indentation in the ball with the striker, you can now lift the hood and see if the striker is hitting in the center of the hole where it is suppose to be.

If it is not, you MAY need to adjust it. At this point, just lower the striker a LITTLE bit by unscrewing it (there will be a jamb nut that you need to back off first) down. Shut the hood and see if it is going down all the way on the sides, does it fit flush with the fenders? If it is too high and you can push down on the hood and it moves down to hit the rubber bumpers the latch may be too loose and you have tighten the striker back up a little.

Lube it first and see how that goes.

Brian

YES folks every HR.COM membership comes equipped with it's own rubber room and straight jacket ....MAN I love this place!!!!!(and the 8 ' sleeves)

P.S. if all that dont work cut out both sides of the latch mechanism (torch or saws-all are the approved methods) and strap down with a bungee cord or the handy mans secret weapon DUCT TAPE

now where dem pictures be at?

Guy I worked with had it happen twice on a Range Rover, wrapped right over the top of the screen. Second time it took the screen out, and even then the dippo never got the latch fixed

thats ok im just playing with you dont take me wrong ok just playing around

im not familiar with a 66 thunder bird so thats why i asked for some pictures
put some penetrating oil on it
then some white lithium grease out of a can
see if the cable is free
and the return springs are ok

then if it needs some adjusting be care full to not get it too far that it binds and wont release

sorry for squeezing your shoes i was trying to be a comedian accept my apology??

White Lithium grease comes in a can and will kindof congeal after coming out of the can thus getting further down into the mechanism , but use it sparingly because it will attract dirt and grit which will eventually make your poop pop again

hope this helps
