well the motor is all together now just waiting on the truck to be done at the paint shop I got a buddy that owns an offroad shop here and he helped me rebuild the tranny (th-400) and my axle shafts should be here on the 15th for my dana 60 rear end build I narrowed the rear end 7 inches so I had to build wheel tubs out of two sets of inner fenders anyway thats where im at with it I was hoping to of had it done by now but thats the way it goes I guess.

well ive been driving the truck for a couple days now havent burned a tank of fuel through it yet. yesterday i took a friend of mine for a ride and we decided that it could be running better so today i checked the timing and the msd distributor I have is mechanical advance and its only advancing a total of 8 degrees I figured i would want my timing somewhere around 34* total timing so I set base timing at 27* this doesnt seem like the right way to do this to me any input would be good and also we reset valve lash and it was aways off but that was kinda expected i did it before the motor was even in the truck so it wasnt hot and didnt have oil in it

so today we took the truck for a ride after the adjustments and it will break the tires loose at 45 in second gear so we think its doing alot better he says its faster than his old truck that ran 13.20s but im worried about the timing maybe thats the wrong way of doing it I dont know please give me some input

thanks
jeff

Im gonna try and run it at the track friday and we shall see what it does

As long as you don't have detonation from that much initial timing it should be fine. Many times a larger camshaft needs a lot of initial timing, I frequently have modified distributors to only allow 8-14 mechanical advance curve, just to be able to use more imitial timing.

that distributor should be adjustable.

but not a big deal to run 27 degrees initial if the starter can handle it.

You can race it the day you put it together. If something is wrong and it is gonna blow, it's gonna blow no matter how many easy break-in miles are put on it. 20 minutes run time to bed the rings and lifters and you are good to go. It may exhibit a little blow-by until the rings are fully bedded in, but it won't hurt anything.

Aah, it's not illegal to make a half pass the first time out, as a shake down run- before you well and truly thrash it...

I think untill i get a fatter tire in the truck it will be pretty slow take off till about 45 mph this will also be my very first pass down the track driving I have rode in the passenger seat but definetly not the same I have had butterflys in my stomach all day like im a kid racing bicycles again

just for fun anybody wanna take guesses on how fast we are gonna go
keep in mind its my first night just gonna do a test and tune tonight

the motor specs are posted back on the first page
73 chevy truck no front bumper or hood stock heigth no carpet or much of an interior should weigh about 3550 with me in it stock turbo 400 hughes 3000 converter aluminum wheels 3.73 gears spool mickey thompson s/s indy profile size is l60x15

I would like my et to be 12.9 but hope to get 110 mph

I would like to hear your guesses

you might get the 12.9, probably will get the 110 mph, but i think you are going to need deeper gears for best ET. 4.30 or 4.56

well i only ran twice but my first pass I ran

r/t .811 haha bad nerves

60' 2.245
330' 5.312

1/8th 8.868

1000' 11.400

1/4 13.520 @ 106.35 mph

second pass

r/t .372

60' 2.174

330 5.791

1/8 8.741

1/4 13.463 @100.33 mph

keep in mind this truck has only been on the road 3 days and it is both mine and the trucks very first time down the track I have rode in another truck but never drove down the track so I will get better and faster but my oil is looking kinda milky so i wanna address any problems i have

how should i have crank case vent or vacuum ran what do you do ? I only have one hole in my one valve cover and its pushing oil out the bolts on the other side so i obviously need more vent/vacuum

PCV valve in one cover, should be in a baffled hole. Breather in the other cover.

60' is poor, did you have a lot of wheel spin??
