I AM USING A 31 SEDAN BODY. COULD SOME ONE TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF REAR END I SHOULD PUT IN IT? WHAT I AM LOOKIN FOR IS HOW WIDE IT SHOULD BE.. (OUT SIDE TO OUT SIDE) I AM NOT GOING TO RUN FENDERS. BUT IT WILL BE A HIGH BOY STYLE. I HAVE A 70 NOVA REAR END AND A S10 4X4 REAR END WILL ONE OF THESE WORK? IF NOT WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR?????? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP... ![]() |

re: hot rod model a rear end
Most Model A guys like to run a Ford rear end......either a 8 inch series or the stronger 9 inch. I prefer the 9 inch myself. 1957 to 1959 Ford cars have a 9 inch series rear end that is 58 inch....measured the way you described.....
The 9 inch is " The choice " of most rodders because of the strength and the ease of changing gears. The parts availability is GREAT Also... I have a early Ford Bronco 9 inch series rear en under my 32 Ford roadster....it is 58 inches also but has the 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern.......which I wanted.....to match my 56 F-100 front brakes... On my 32 3W........under construction..I used a 57 Ford 9 inch...with the big axle bearings.....look at my project journal for a few " under construction photos " The 70 Nova rear should measure out at 60 inches....and the S-10 4x4 rear end is most likely too narrow. I do not like either......because of the way the gear is installed.....and the axle bearings are in the tubes.....not on the axle shafts....but that is just me...... |

re: hot rod model a rear end
56 wide wheel to wheel seems to be a little better for an A.
Chevy rears are fine. Axles and wheel bearings are no problem especially with a lightweight A. Who ever changes gears in a Ford 8 or 9 more than once in a car's life anyway? Not many of us drive to the strip, swap rears, race, swap back to come home.... In my opinion that is irrelavent. |
