back in 1983, my friend had a daily-driven '65 bug, 2180cc VW engine, that would run 12.20...on 7" street radial tires!
i myself had a "small"1775cc(stock stroke) street/strip VW engine, good crank/ported big-valved heads/48 webers, cost me less than $2500 to build. in my friend's lightened BUG, the best it ran was 12.00 seconds, with slicks.
both motors without nitrous or blowers/turbos, idled almost like stockers.
back then, a complete dual-weber setup was $300-$600. i imagine that VW parts are MUCH more expensive, and high-tech.
