i was wondering what you fellas think about hot rod volkswagons? i've never seen a beetle do a burn out or run a drag strip. my dad when growing up lived off of volkswagons and so did my granddad. my dad would blow up an engine and go to his dads basement and pull of 1 of 50 out. he still has gobs of vw engine parts in his basement im sort of in the process of looking for first hot rod project. iv looked in magazines and seen and seen vw performance parts for fairly cheep. would all would it take for a vw to do a stout burn out and run the 13 to 14 sec. range at a quarte mile? Have any of you had a vw?

the next time my dad's at the comp, i'll have to show him the question (he had a VW shop in AZ for a few years in the seventies, did mostly off-road, but a little track, engine-building, roll bars, some of everything).
funny this should come up - my jaw dropped a week or so ago when my dad and i were talking about 1/4 times, and he said 'oh yeah, i used to keep my 12-second timeslip on my bulletin board, wonder where it went"... ... this was from a vw bug. so running 13 to 15 shouldn't be outrageous... i'll have him post a reply when he gets around to it.
oh... and there was a post a while back (don't remember the topic, maybe in 'worst car you've ever had on the road') talking about doing a burnout in a stock bug - found a freshly paved road with a downhill grade, rolled the car backwards down the hill, and dumped the clutch. (had to replace the trans a few weeks after 3 or 4 of those, tho).

I love lowrider bugs and the really old busses, you know the ones with the pop out windshields, ya those are cool. I'd love to build an old VW bus. When my dad was younger he and some friends put a 327 in a bug, he says it was pretty quick. I wouldn't think it'd be hard to put a bug in the 13's. A fairly hot small block (chevy of course), and some real rubber to hook it up. That is a nice bug HRK, did you buy this one? Or did your uncle give it to you for a stick of gum, well what ever the story thats a nice rig.

My dad was a VW mechanic for years before he passed away. Ive owned a dozen or so assorted vw's, rails, busses, baja's, ect... I love em. I was gonna do one before I decided on the Gremlin, but chose to hold off. Doing a burnout in a bug isnt really that hard. Rev her up and let her rip. It takes like 200 horses to get the bug to do low 12's hi 12's and thats not hard, but kinda costly. You can get blowers for Vw's that takes a single 4 barrell. And I believe its Gene Berg that offers a 2500cc stroker engine that with the right setup will get you around 250 horses.
You would surprise a ton of people. Let me know if you do one. Id be interested in how it works out. HG

In all honesty I can tell you from experience. Horsepower from a VW is not cheap by any means. I’ve spent literally thousands of dollars on my VW motor for my buggy, and I’m lucky if I got 200hp. If you want some information on what parts to get it’s simple, bigger pistons, bigger crank, Weber carbs, ported heads, and please do something with the exhaust. VW motors are great power plants. They just require a ridiculous amount of TLC. Oh and if your wanting to run this motor in temps less the 50 degrees and more then 70% humidity, FORGET IT. The way the intakes are the condensation in the air will freeze inside in less than 5 minutes of idle. Hope this general information helps. Any other questions just ask!

Man i've seen volkswagons get on the gas and the burn rubber and not stop till he off the gas. you can make run the quater mile in under 10 easy. there nationa drag races set up just for volkswagon. volkswagons will do wheelies in 3rd gear. but you do have to put some work into them

Many moons ago I worked with a guy that took a built 2.8 V6 Chevy and stuffed in in a Beetle. The car supposidly did the 1/4 in just under 13 seconds.

He worked on it during his lunch hour ( the boss let us use the bays during non paid time ) for the better part of a year. He built a HD sub frame, strengthened the chassis and put in 4 wheel discs.

back in 1983, my friend had a daily-driven '65 bug, 2180cc VW engine, that would run 12.20...on 7" street radial tires!

i myself had a "small"1775cc(stock stroke) street/strip VW engine, good crank/ported big-valved heads/48 webers, cost me less than $2500 to build. in my friend's lightened BUG, the best it ran was 12.00 seconds, with slicks.

both motors without nitrous or blowers/turbos, idled almost like stockers.

back then, a complete dual-weber setup was $300-$600. i imagine that VW parts are MUCH more expensive, and high-tech.
