How to Build a Utility Trailer

Just added this to the Garage-Tools Articles category of the Hotrodders Knowledge Base:

How to Build a 5'x10' Utility Trailer.

Quote:
I needed a trailer to haul around a snowmobile so I decided that I might get*better use out of a general utility trailer instead of a snowmobile trailer.* I checked the local trailer retailers and found that the going rate for a 5' x 10' utility trailer was around $1,300 Cdn.* The trailers weren't very*strong and were made mostly from light angle iron.* Always looking for a good project, I decided to build one instead.

Good webpage, even includes AutoCAD plans. However, I'm sure our guys could do (or already have done) the same project for less money.

re: How to Build a Utility Trailer

I built my first trailer when I was 18, I am 60 now and have built dozens of them for myself, friends, neighbors , etc. It is not hard to do. I always put my axle 6 in. behind center of the bed. Thats the bed measurement( not counting the tongue). For a tandem axle I put the center shackle mount 6in. behind bed center. Remember the longer the tongue the easier it will be to back. Good luck.

re: How to Build a Utility Trailer

i just want to say ditto on the axle placement if this is overlooked you could be putting too much weight on the rear of the haul vehicle ive even seen where the load was pulling up on the *** of the tow vehicle and also take into account what you plan to haul on the trailer and where most of the weight will be but for general purpose the henry hirise hit it on the button
