Post how to change gears....

I dont know if this is a crazy question or not, but the gears, or somehting went out in the rear end.I was driving down the road and the back tires locked up! I slid to a halt and got out and took a look. I decided to try to make it home (city block) and I made it just fine except for a "knocking" type noise in the rear. I took the cover off and found that the oild was in good shape but found the bolt that hold the center pin in place had come out. the bolt was cut in half and one end was shaped like a gear so i know it went through them. I then fired it up and put in in gear and the gears looked okay, thre were no abnormal spots on either of them, and no knocking noise. so i figured i'd give it a try and take her down the road so i put it back together and suck, still makes that sound. no missing or gears though, no grinding just a knocking noise. so how I know something has to be replaced. could it possibly be anything else besides the gears? maybe a flat bearing or something? so, I'm looking at gearsets and then I read about some stuff where it is critical about pinion depth and such and all the horror stories about messing it up. is it really that hard??? I've watched kids throw gear in there cars strait out of the junkyard into their cars withought stripping the pinion gears as i heard will happen. I'm very mechanical minded but never done this type of job before and need some input. tia!

not sure what your problem woulb be but as far as swapping gears it can be easier than most think. If you have the correct tools and are mechanically inclined it can be done rather easily. Either you could purchase a set up tool which runs around 75-100 bux or a good dial indicator and magnetic base will work but then it takes a little longer but can be done.Pinion depth is the hardest part in my opinion but most people would rather leave this to someone else

The knocking noise may be a bent gear tooth, caused by the bolt running through the ring and pinion, something had to give and it was probably the ring gear tooth, setting up rear ends is a very specialized process, in the large city I used to live in,only one shop actually had the equipment and only one experienced tech to set them up, they were always backlogged with work, mostly re-do's from the other places.

I figure everything +tools would cost me $400 and comes with a video showing me how to do it. I'm pretty shure i can do it with the tools and parts, I just wanted to make shure that there wasnt anyhting else besides the gears themselves. if anybody knows where I can get the gears with all the shims and such for a really good price I'd like to know. I think I'll go out in the yeard and see if the gears on one of my old racecars are the same. by the way its a 82 trans am. 10 bolt 7.5 rear posi-disc
