how to check for jumping spark

Every one in a while I hear the cracking of spark as I turn the engine on. The engine turns on fine but there is a definite "crack" of electricity. I read you can spray a light mist of water in the area to help bring out the problem. Will this work or will I burn some thing up. The truck runs fine now but I am worried that when it rains the issue will get worse and leave me stranded. I have also ran the engine on the dark but did not see anything.
I did recently install a external coil on my HEI.

Stray sparks.

Maybe a close look at all the boots on top of the cap, coil and plugs is needed. High voltage from the coil is a good place to start. Plug leads may be at the end of their life. Check all the earth connections.Voltage will be highest from the coil at cranking speed which is when the problem is likely to occur. Maybe someone watches the coil in the dark while you crank it over.
