How to dial in a cam?

I was looking for good instruction on how to dial in a cam. I built an engine some 30 years ago and believe it or not I think its time to think about fireing it off! LOL I remember setting it up at 0 degrees but I got a bunch of plastic cam shaped plastic inserts for fine tuning it. Think I had better read up and find out what that is all about? Any good threads or reading material you can suggest that explains what I need to do here?

Thanks that explained everything but what you do if it needs adjusting with the little inserts.
