How To Do The Best Butt Weld ?
 
Hi Guys

Can any you guys out there tell me the best way to butt (mig)weld a patch panel into me front lower fender please?

From stitch welds to finishing up with a good filler material.

I'm Not Making The Patch From Scratch
 
Hi Milo

No I'm not making the patch panel from scratch. I bought it new.

Can you answer some of these questions please.

Is it best to cut the new panel first ?
Then match the newly cut patch panel against my fender and draw a line with either tape or a sharpie pen?
This way I have a perfect match to butt weld the joint?

And lastly, Isn't best to cut as least as possible on my fender, just a couple of inches up from the rust?

Your plan is sound for the most part. Be sure you are able to access the cause of the rust in the first place... In some cases it is best to change a whole panel to be sure to get at trouble that is lurking behind inner panels etc..

Yes, trim the new part down to what you really need to replace and transfer that line to your car.

A "sharpie" pen isn't going to do it for a butt weld. What gives you that super fine line you need for a butt is nice sharp awl. You cut the old metal out leaving about an inch or so left that is smaller than your TRIMMED patch panel. You clamp that in place over the old metal and then scribe a line right along the patch using an awl. Remove the patch and trim the metal using a die grinder with cut off wheel, tin snips, angle grinder, file, what ever you need to trim the old metal right up to that awl scratch. You now will have a FLAWLESS seam to butt weld.

schooner, I have tried it both ways for doing my butt welds and Milo and MartinSr turned me on to the "trim the new part down" and it worked perfect. What I did was get my new piece like I wanted to and then put it up against where I was going to be patching in and then scribed with a center punch all around my patch piece, leaving an outline on the piece to be cut out. Now when I went to cut out my piece I actually took of just a hair more because I started using those intergrip panel clamps they look like this:
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/1272/p3545cu.jpg. Once I got one or two in place I would make a few very small pentrating tac welds and then loosen up the panel clamps and remove them. Now If you asking what If I don't have access to the back. Well what I started doing was attaching a small piece of very playable wire to the little block piece and usually found some hole or location I could pull the block out through. I've done this quite a few times. Also on the cooling time between tack welds. I like Milo's ideal. tack a few then wait go back and tack so more. Once I had it all tacked in I would use a 36 grit roloc to first knock them down then go back and use an 80 or 100 to finish it off. Good Luck

Thanks for the heads-up on just how to mig weld my new patch panel :thumbup:

Believe it on not, I DON'T OWN AN AWL :confused:
I never used one to mark anything. Martinsr, just what makes the AWL better than; Sharpie's or placing tape as a fine line.

Just asking, I'll get the Awl like you suggested though.

I guess the Awl leaves a permenat mark on the fender and I won't loose it while I'm cutting-out the rust area.

You got it, plus it is RIGHT against the metal so your cut can be super accurate.

Hey Brain ~ What About Finishing The Butt Weld ?
 
hi Brain

What about finishing the patch panel. I mean with:
How far do I grind-down the mig weld? Do I grind it down FLUSH with the fender? Or go BEYOND into the mig weld itself in order for the seam weld to accept the bonding material.

Please bear with me I've asks this questions on a number of times and gotten some different answers.

So, once more with felling . . . lol
Some other question please:

WHAT FILLER MATERIAL do you prefer to finish-off the project?
LEAD or some kind of BONDO ?

Would you use anti-rust spray some way along the way to prevent rust?
If so, when ? ? ?
