how do I build a 383 stroker out of a small 350?

I need to know how to take a chev small block 350 and built it into a 383stroker motor. I need to know all the parts i need to make the 383 storker. I have a 350 crate and a 400. I want to make the 350into a 383stroker. i can use parts from the 400 but what else do i need??????? Please help????????? Thanks

When fellows first started building 383's, they would cut the main journal diameter down on a 400 crank, from 2.650" to 2.450" so that the crank would bolt into the 350 block on standard 350 main bearings. Then they would use the 350 rods and a special 350 piston with the wrist pin in a higher position in the piston resulting in a 1.425"-1.435" compression height instead of the conventional 1.560" 350 stock stroke piston. Here's an example of an 18cc D-cup dish piston that might be used with 64cc cylinder heads to make a 9.6:1 383 that would run nicely on pump gas with the right camshaft and the right squish.

Some fellows prefer to use an aftermarket 6.000" connecting rod, necessitating an even shorter piston. Here is an example of a piston that might be used to build a 9.6:1 static compression ratio 383 if using 64cc heads....

These days, it may make more sense to begin with a new crankshaft, depending on how much you would have invested in a stock 400 crank that is 40 years old. Scat casts one up from steel that is affordable and does a good job. Pay attention now, it is cast steel, not cast iron and not forged steel.
This would be an external balance crankshaft, so you would use your 400 harmonic damper and 400 flexplate on the crank.

There is quite a lot of knowledge on this forum, so do as 327NUT suggested and surf around using the search function, then come back and ask specific questions until you get your combination dialed in.

Why not just use the 350 rods, get some good aftermarket pistons and build a 400? A well built 400 will smoke a like built 383 every time.

Agree^^^^. If you got a 400 that is the engine to use. Bigger cubes is bigger power potential every time.

Yep, a 400 would be better than a 383 any day of the week. The reason many people buy aftermarket 383 rods is because they are built so they won't have any clearance problems. If you use the stock 350 rods you may have to grind them or other parts of the engine to make them not hit anything.
