How do I hook up my alternator?

I've got a 1960 Belair, newly rebuilt generator and I don't know exactly how to hook it up. I know that the way I hooked it up drains my battery overnight. What's wrong? Anybody have a diagram or a clue? Obviously I don't. -C

field wire to the F terminal on the regulator,
armature wire to the A terminal on the regulator,
12 v to the B terminal
ground post on the gen to regulator case & to ground
dont forget to "polarize" the regulator...jumper the b terminal to the f terminal MOMENTARILY.

Generator? Alternator?

Doc here ,

I refer back to my prior post....Even though the diagram is a few years newer than your Bel aire, it should be almost wire for wire.

Generator Diagram for 1963 to 65 General Mystery Vehicles

Do you have a generator (should be if stock) or Alternator?

Does it charge? Do you get 14.4 volts while running at any speed(for alternator) and 12 volts at idle and increase on rpm to 14.4 while revving (for generator)?

Is the Regulator Stuck...that will drain the battery while just sitting...check that If necessary, charge the battery disconnect the battery wire from the regulator and let it sit overnight...does it stay up?

Is the horn disconnected maybe because the horn relay is stuck and wasn't repaired other than pulling the horn wire? That will run a battery dead too.

Is the Battery Any Good? Full charge it 6 to 10 hours on a charger at 10 amps..it should come up to zero..If hard to charge, get it load tested, It may have bad cells..

Eliminate those first, then if all those basics are good , we'll walk you through the individual circuit load testing to find the source of overnight discharge.

Hey Doc, Thanks for all your help. I wasn't able to locate my first post. I'll hook everything up per your diagram. I'll work on trouble-shooting everything you mentioned today. P.S.-Battery is good. I wish that was the problem...
