How do I "Jerry Rig" 73 Nova Headlight 's
 
I broke the switch on my dash for the headlights on my 73 nova. How do I bypass it so I can drive it at night? I am not afraid to cut and splice and soldier.

Having seen many fires caused by doing this, I recommend against it. I also had a dash flame up -pretty scary at 70MPH.

At the local pick a part the switches are about 50 cents. It should be a common GM part used in many different models.

get a wire that is about 3 feet long and that has alligator clips on both sides. connect one to the headlight closest to your battery, make sure its the positive terminal for the low beams and then take your other end to the positive on the battery. thats all that it takes. warning, you will become irratated at the fact that you have to pop open your hood to turn on and off your lights!! hope this helps.

Headlite switch was broken in my commando when I bought it. I have a new switch panel now but havent changed it yet. Some one had installed underdash toggle switchs, one for headlights and one for parking lamps. Works fine for now. Hey, a switch is a switch. Get one at Radio Shack that is rated at least 30 amps. I wouldnt recommend by passing or wiring it up directly. At least do that until you can get an replacement switch. A lot of headlight switches have a built in circuit breaker for protection if the circuit isnt already fused.

Just out of curiosity...why not just fix it correctly instead of "Jerry Rigging"? You should be able to get a switch relatively cheap from the junk yard or your local Pep Boys, Advanced, AutoZone should be able to order them.

the guy that i bought my car from "jerry rigged" the hell out of it. i work on cars all them time for friends and when it comes to mine, i just dont want to do it. i have a new switch from napa in my trunk. its just taking the time to deal with it.

'cause I am tearing the whole thing apart. It has no doors, hatchback, dash, rear seats, fenders,hood,,etc. Just bumpers, with lights and a windshield, So itslegal on the roads. I will be stripping all the paint and sanding the interior rust. And just to be less conspicuous, I'll be driving at night. My buddy's house is fourty minuets from my shop in sacramento. I'll be doing the work there with his help. After all the other stuff I'll go back and fix the switch.

Man, you're nuts! Put it on a trailer. You are either going to burn up from faulty jerry-rigged wiring or fall out of the car on the way. Please don't tell me that you will be sitting on a 5 gallon bucket. As for the switch, what are you doing with this car? Driving it to work? Restoring it? If the latter, just do it right. Its gonna take you the same amount of time, if not longer. ...Just my thoughts

I own a 73 Nova. The light switch is common to many GM models, even the local "Inept Boys" stocks it. It's cheap enough to just buy it and fix it corectly...

I am restoring it. And the local parts stores have 'em, but I'd rather just rig it and fix it later.

And I already made my midnight run. And I did in fact make the trip on a peach trip full of phone books with a piece of cardboard duct taped on top.

Bad idea? Yes.
Saftey features? Tuck and roll.
Comfortable?Not until I put my sweatshirt under my duff.

And nova john, need any parts? Have any extra's? I have a lot of extras I would trade or sell. Most oriented towards 72-74nova's.

And I knopw it was a bad idea to sit on a peach crate. But don't tell me you guy's havn't done stuff like that once or twice.

WTF?! That right there is what gives us rodders a bad name...When it comes time for other stuff to be 'restored' are you just going to 'rig' it and fix it later too? Why not just take 5 minutes to fix it correctly with the correct parts and be done with it(safely) instead of using the wrong parts and doing it completely wrong...not to mention the fact that there are other people on the roads at night besides yourself,but thats just me.
I have bought several good cars CHEAP because people didn't know how to fix something correctly and just 'rigged' it.

No, I have never used a peach crate to sit on in place of a seat. The ignition swith on my 53 chevy shorted and would not allow me to shut off the engine, had to remove the wire from the distributorto shut off the car. No head lights and unable to shut off the car if I needed so I had it towed home as it was unsafe to drive.

I had a '72 Monte Carlo that I had just put together a motor for, and I had an electric fan wired through the fuse panel without a relay (just wanted to drive it). I had my brother in the car and headed out for a drive, after a little bit I had to see what she would do. I was doing about ninety when I decided to let off, the throttle stuck and I couldn't get it to unstick. So I just shut the key off enough to kill it but not lock the steering wheel. Here's where my butt was eating the upholstery, the electric fan was generating power and still feeding the ignition. And I was headed into a little traffic and still doing about ninety, so I dropped it to second and reached under the dash and pulled the ignition wire while my brother steered and my foot on the brake. Let me just say that power brakes don't work too good at almost WOT, let alone the size of the cam. I should have re-routed the wire the very moment that I noticed the motor still ran for a second after shutting off the key. But I was wanting to go right now and never expected the throttle to stick like that. :eek: :D
