If you are talking about priming it with gas, just poor a bit down the carb. If you are talking about oil, don't poor it down the carb
I don't know sbc that well, but the oil pump runs off the disributor right? you can make a tool or buy one that you attach to an electric drill and prime the pump. I made mine for my stude out of 3/8 round stock. good luck

yes you can prime your new engine with a drill and a shaft down the distrib hole but be careful not to damage the drive or the collar in the shaft, if you are short the proper tools you can get a good battery set up everything to run then unhook the distrib hot wire and crank the engine till you show pressure , then hook up the distrib and presto-new life.

Talking

Go to the wrecking yard and get a regular SBC points dist. Grind (or have it done for you) the gear on it smooth. Just grind the teeth, you can leave the nub. Remove everything on top. You will be left with enough shaft sticking up on top to fasten a 1/2 drill to. Drop it in and start drilling, soon the oil will start coming into the rockers. It takes a good heavy duty drill.
OR...buy one from a performance supply.

the last message about not having pressure was dead on. .if you do not use a special tool or the dist minus the gear it will bypass. It is imperative that you boild oil pressure prior to starting your eng. the lifters and valve train components will appreciate it
