How do I tell what engine is in this car LT1 LT4 corvette or other

My son bought a 88 trans am and the selelr told him the engine was an LT 1or 4, out of a corvette we would like to identifythe engine. Could someone tell me where the serial number is located on this engine and also where I can look it up once I find it

Lt1

the casting number is on the rear of the block where th bell housing bolts up. it should have 5.7 cast into the drivers side of the block behind the drivers side head. behind the passenger side head should be an 8 digit number that you can look up.in front of the passenger side head on the block is a stamped number that should give you more info

An LT1/LT4 block will have the last 3 digits of the casting number (327) cast into the side. Look kinda between the freeze plugs, but not in line with them. If it says 588, it's the L99 4.3L engine.
