I know everyone has there own way but whats yours?On my dd I just got done painting it,its a half ton 2nd gen ram&now Im doing some suspension upgrades one being the shocks&while removing the bolts on the bottom of the shocks couldnt get the bolt on either one to budge (front pair) they have a box/shackle that connect the control arm&the back is (not sure what ya call it)but one of those welded on nuts.Well the truck dosnt sit up high enough to get a breaker bar on the wrench,its been soaked with pb,heated with tons still wont budge.Im to the point now that Im gonna have to hit the hesd of the bolt with a air hammer if that dosnt work Im gonna use my cut off wheel&drill the rest out.You guys got any good tricks?

Have you ever heard of the term: "Cold enough to freeze the nuts off a steel bridge"

The idea is that freezing the bolt makes it contract, which allows the penetrating fluid component to flow into the empty spaces.

As far as a penetrating fluid goes, I'm a big fan of a product called "XL440" made by LubeCorp out of Calgary Alberta.

Another useful tool is a bolt extractor made by Irwin tools


Spray those threads, let it sit overnight, then hit it with a 600 ft/lb 1/2" impact. They'll move, or on very rare occasion, break.

The dissambly of my 1966 GMC resulted in about 4 broken fastners ... where the metal was totally fused together.

One other "old-school" trick ... Parafin Wax.
Heat lightly (say 250° - 300°F) then touch the wax to the bolt threads. This is sort of the opposite of the freeze and release. You want to heat the theaded component to expand it, and the wax will wick into the open spaces.

Colbalt's link in my opinion the best number of ways to take a bolt out. My personal favorite is find a piece of pipe that is the next sized done to the hole.Then I would use an ceritanium 707 or 7018 if you cannot find any at a local machine/welding shop and build up the bolt hole with weld. When the bolt hole is flush weld a washer and a nut to the built up area. The heat from welding will shrink the bolt and the pipe will protect the threads.

The best pentrating oil I've used us kroil by kano labs. We use it allthe time doing maintenancein the oil refinery. Let soak then put your wrench on the nut if you can the beat the wrench with a 4 lb beater. We do this on nuts as big as 3 inch usually as rusty as can be, most the piping and equipment we work on is been in service for at least fifty years some closer to 80. The heat and cool then beat works as well but I usually do that as a last resort.

I can tell you from experience that those front shock bolts on a Dodge defy most anything... I tried heat, cold, PB Blaster, Kroil, 600 ft lb impact, 3/4" impact, CP air hammer.... nothing bodged them. I finally used a cut-off wheel (several in fact) and THAT finally did it.

Now the rears were a snap... go figure!

Yeah same here I hit ot with pb,try the impact,air hammer,air ratchet,hest,Finally burnt the head of the bolt off&the flag nut with a torch&knocked the rest out.
