How do you upholster a hole or inside an ellipse?

It doesn't seem physically possible to me, but I thought I'd ask.

Given 1/4" foam under vinyl, how would you upholster a hole or the inside of a long ellipse without some kind of trim?

If it can't be done without trim, what kind of trim is used?

Thanks

This may not be what you have in mind, but might give you some ideas. These ellipses are on my door panels and the center insert is 1/8" aluminum. The graphic is a vinyl decal. You can view more pics and detail in my journal starting here.
