How Does the Ford Pull-Out style Overdrive work?

I have a 1961 Ford Galaxie with a three speed on the column and a "Pull Out" style overdrive unit. How do I activate it and how does the overdrive engage? Thanks.

Overdrive Operation

They are pretty simple compared to modern technology....and Ford used them up into the 70's on some of their trucks.
go to www.fordification.com they have a real nice article explaining how they work. You can also find a wiring diagram at auto-wiring-diagram.com. Once you see the wiring I'm sure you'll be able to figure out what's wrong. Assuming the solenoid is ok and they were pretty tough...it's just a matter of making sure you have power to it.

overdrive info

there's info here on HR ,go to the Wiki at the top of this page, then transmissions, then GM and go down to the bottom . some info on overdrives, generic but might help. If you have the T 85 w11 they are strong, it was the basis for redesign to make the Bw T 10.s 4 speeds,

Thanks for the Overdrive Info.

thanks. I'll look at those references just as soon as I can get the gas tank back in and hooked up. The sending unit was leaking. Pulled it out and found that the tank was knarlified. That's a technical word for "all messed up". And, the pickup sock was missing from the pickup. Ordered a new one - should be here maybe on Thursday or Friday hopefully. This car was supposed to be a Christmas present to my daughter. Oh Well.
