How to find readend gear ratio on housing of GM S-10 10 bolt.
I have recorded these numbers & letters off the housing! Around outside perimeter: GM 18 K In middle of drivers side housing: J 29 2 Under that 26027171 N Somebody told me that it is a 3.42 ratio Posi-Traction! Anybody know for sure????????

the numbers should be on the gears, not the housing. afaik anyway.
to get a real close #. i mark the pinion and axle/tire. then turn the pinion and count how many times it goes around, to make 1 turn on the axle/tire.

I have 2 S10s and both have 3.42 gears. If you call the dealership with your VIN# they will tell you what the truck came with.
